EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior
Christine Swiker leads the East Stroudsburg University swimming program into the 2010 PSAC Championships this weekend at Cumberland Valley High School after setting two school records and nearly a third a year ago.
ESU will serve as the host institution for the championships, which run from Thursday through Sunday in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
Swiker made the championship finals in all three of her events last year, finishing fourth in the 400 IM, seventh in the 200 IM and eighth in the 200 fly, and is a four-year individual qualifier during her time at ESU.
She broke records in the 200 IM (2:11.54) and 400 IM (4:39.19) and was six-hundredths of a second off the school record of 2:14.60 in the 200 fly that was set in 1981. Her times in the 200 IM and 400 IM made the NCAA “B” cut and she will compete in all three events once again this year as a senior.
Swiker swam her best times in the 200 and 400 IM this year at the Longnecker Invitational at Grove City College on December 5, going 2:14.66 in the 200 and 4:46.75 in the 400. She posted a time of 2:15.98 in the 200 fly in a dual with C.W. Post in January.
Junior
Sarah Roscioli is an individual qualifier for the third straight year and holds all three school records in the breaststroke. She will swim the 100 and 200 breast and the 50 free and has ESU's season-best times in all three events – 1:08.75 in the 100 breast, 2:32.27 in the 200 breast and 25.35 in the 50 free. She broke her own record in the 100 breast (1:08.16) at last year's PSAC championships.
Five other Warriors have also qualified, including senior
Heather Van O'Linda and junior
Amy Rowland, who have championship relay experience but will be competing individually for the first time. Van O'Linda will swim the 50 and 100 free and 100 breast, and Rowland will be in the pool for the 50 free, 200 free and 200 back.
Freshmen
Kimberly Lawson,
Tara Robinson and
Sami Vavra will make their PSAC Championship debuts for the Warriors. Lawson has ESU's best times this year in the 100 fly (1:00.39) and 200 back (2:14.07) and will also compete in either the 100 free or 200 fly. Robinson is slated to go in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly and Vavra is entered in the 100 back and 100 breast.
Two more freshmen,
Rose Mascoli and
Ana Osowski, will also make the trip to Mechanicsburg and compete on the Warriors' relay teams.
The championships open on Thursday night with the 1000 free and continue through Sunday evening.
