EAST STROUDSBURG - Sophomore Ian Allen threw a complete game with 11 strikeouts in an 8-2 win in the opener, leading East Stroudsburg University to a doubleheader split vs. Shippensburg in PSAC East baseball on Monday at Mitterling Field.

ESU (15-7, 6-6), playing its home opener, used a six-run fifth-inning to break open the first game.

Shippensburg (11-15, 7-5) won the nightcap, 4-2, behind a fifth-inning grand slam by Jimmy Spanos.

ESU and Ship split the season series, 2-2. Ship won the first game on Friday, 10-3, before the Warriors responded with a 19-6 win in game two.

Allen tossed his second complete game of the season, the first a no-hitter on March 8 at Virginia State, to improve to 4-1 in five starts this spring.

He held Shippensburg to one earned run on seven hits, struck out 11 and walked two. He has a 3.55 ERA, 34 strikeouts and just seven walks in 25.1 innings this season.

Redshirt junior 3B Drew Hercik hit a three-run homer as part of the six-run fifth inning in ESU's victory.

Hercik was 6-for-14 with two doubles, a homer, five RBI and three runs to lead ESU offensively in the four-game series.

Allen was 4-for-11 with two doubles, a homer, six RBI and four runs, redshirt sophomore OF Casey Saverio was 5-for-14 with a double, RBI and five runs and redshirt sophomore OF Jay Young was 6-for-17 with a double, three RBI and five runs.

Game 1 - W 8-2

ESU scored single runs in the first and second innings, Ship scored in the fourth and fifth to tie the game at 2-2, and the Warriors scored six runs in the fifth.

In the first, junior 1B Dylan Tamecki had an RBI double after Allen walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Hercik hit a leadoff double in the second, moved up on a sacrifice bunt by junior 2B Nick Rabasco and scored on a sacrifice fly by Young.

Ship got single runs in the fourth and fifth, but Allen stranded three combined runners to end the frames.

In the fifth, Young and Saverio singled with one out, and after a Tamecki walk loaded the bases with two outs, redshirt sophomore SS Conner Crookham lifted a wind-blown popup that landed closer to first base than the middle infield, turning into a two-RBI single that gave the Warriors a 4-2 lead.

Freshman OF Christian Rishel reached on an error which scored Tamecki, and Hercik extended the lead to 8-2 with a three-run homer to left, his second of the season and the fourth of his career.

Allen retired six of the final seven batters he faced, and struck out the side around a one-out single in the seventh inning to seal the victory.

ESU had nine hits, including two each by Young, Saverio and Hercik.

Mark Curtis threw a complete game (6.0 IP, 8 runs, 4 earned) for Shippensburg.

Game 2 - L 4-2

Junior Brandon Holup blanked Ship through four innings, but Spanos' grand slam to right with two outs in the fifth inning was the difference.

ESU scored two runs in the first inning off Gabe Mosser (7.0 IP, 2 runs, 1 earned, 9 strikeouts, 4 walks) but couldn't push any more across. The Warriors left eight runners on base, including seven in scoring position, and left the bases loaded in the third.

Young and Saverio singled to lead off the first inning, redshirt junior DH Matt Walewski had an RBI double and Saverio scored on a passed ball to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.

After Spanos' grand slam, ESU managed a baserunner in the sixth on a two-out single by freshman 2B Aden Tully but couldn't push him across.

Sophomore Tyler Eckman threw 2.0 scoreless innings (1 hit allowed) in relief of Holup (5.0 IP, 4 runs).

Young had two hits in the leadoff spot and was 4-for-7 in the doubleheader.
