Grant Named Warriors’ Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week
EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman guard Whis Grant has been named East Stroudsburg University’s Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week after receiving the PSAC East Freshman of the Week for the third time this season on Monday.
Grant (Plymouth Meeting/Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 21 points against Bloomsburg and 22 against West Chester in two games this week, shooting 13-for-18 (72.2 percent) from the field and 7-for-10 from the three-point line for his fourth and fifth 20-point games of the season.
Grant, ESU’s leading scorer with 14.7 points per game, has been named PSAC East Freshman of the Week for two straight weeks in helping the Warriors to a 3-1 record in their last four games. He is averaging 18.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.8 steals while shooting 68.6 percent from the field, 61.1 percent (11-for-18) from the three-point line and 78.9 percent (15-for-19) from the foul line during that stretch.
Grant, who has scored in double figures in 17 of the Warriors’ 20 games, is in the midst of one of the best freshman seasons in school history. He has scored 294 points, on the verge of the fifth 300-point season by an ESU freshman since 1974-75, and his average of 14.7 ppg currently ranks second to Shahad Abdur-Rahkman’s 18.4 ppg in 1999-00.
He is also within reach of the freshman record of 48 three-pointers set by Will Brown last season. Grant has made 40 three-pointers and trails only Andy Heimbach, ESU’s career leader who made 43 in 2006-07, and Brown, who is taking a medical redshirt this season.
Grant is second among PSAC freshmen and 14th among Division II freshmen in scoring entering Wednesday’s game at Cheyney. He is 16th overall in the PSAC in scoring, sixth in three-point percentage (44.0), 12th in three-pointers made (2.0 per game) and 10th in steals (1.5 per game). He leads ESU with 29 steals and is second with 55 assists while shooting 51.1 percent.
