EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior forward
Rasheed Moore scored a career-high 33 points and tied a career-best with 16 rebounds, leading East Stroudsburg University to a 106-87 win over Lock Haven in the first round of the PSAC men's basketball tournament on Monday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Moore had 23 points and nine rebounds in the first half, pacing the Warriors to a commanding 55-32 advantage, and LHU never got closer than 13 over the final 24 minutes of the contest.
ESU (18-10), the PSAC East No. 3 seed, advances to the PSAC quarterfinals on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Shippensburg (23-3), the No. 2 seed.
Redshirt senior guard
Quindell Brice scored 17 points, sophomore guard
Kitt Najee Walls had 13 points and seven assists and sophomore guard
Nick Giordano had 11 for the Warriors.
ESU reaches the PSAC quarterfinals for the eighth straight year, extending the longest streak in school history. The Warriors made six straight Final Four's from 2010-16, the second-longest streak in the PSAC in the last 35 years, including the 2012 and 2014 PSAC titles.
Moore's 33 points are one off ESU's PSAC/NCAA postseason high of 34 held by Hall of Famer Jonathan Roberts in an NCAA Division II Tournament first round game vs. Slippery Rock in 1990. His previous career-high was 28 points at Chestnut Hill in November.
He set an ESU PSAC/NCAA postseason single-game record for rebounds, breaking a mark of 15 held by Terrance King (2012 PSAC semifinals vs. Mercyhurst) and Zechariah Runkle (2014 NCAA first round vs. Livingstone). He tied his career-high of 16 boards vs. Lock Haven as a freshman.
Moore, who can become the Warriors' first-ever four-time All-PSAC East selection later this week, had ESU's first 25-point, 15-rebound and 30-point, 15-rebound games under 15th-year head coach
Jeff Wilson.
He recorded ESU's first 30-point, 15-rebound game since Roberts in 1990, and first vs. a PSAC school since Roberts did it twice (in consecutive games) in 1988.
Walls (five points) and Brice (four) were the instigators in an 11-0 run that gave the Warriors a 21-12 lead nine minutes into the contest.
After LHU scored five straight, ESU rattled off eight in a row, including a three and a dunk by Moore in a 15-second span, to lead 28-17.
ESU's biggest stretch was a 15-0 run from the 5:30 to the 1:30 mark in the first half - punctuated by eight points by Moore in a 65-second span which featured back-to-back three-pointers.
In the second half, ESU pushed its lead to 27 (61-34) with two buckets by redshirt sophomore forward
Chris Bing (6 points, 5 rebounds) and another by Moore for its largest advantage of the game.
Lock Haven closed it to 13 (86-73) with 6:20 left, but Giordano answered with his third three of the game to help secure the lead. Brice hit a couple of three's in the final three minutes to end it.
Tarojae Brake (20 points) and Khaleeq Campbell (17) led Lock Haven, which lost in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament for the fourth straight year.
Freshman Amir Hinton, who has set a PSAC freshman record for points and leads the conference with 24.2 points per game, scored 13 points but was 4-for-15 with six turnovers before fouling out with 2:33 remaining.
Craig Slade had 13 points and Cole Renninger added 10 for LHU.
ESU held a 19-11 advantage in turnovers and 41-37 edge in rebounding, gaining margins of 35-15 in points off turnovers and 18-7 in second chance points.
The Warriors were 14-for-31 from the three-point with Moore (4-for-7) setting a career-high for made three's and Giordano going 3-for-5 after missing the last two games due to injury.
ESU had 12 steals and six blocks, with Moore contributing three in each category.
The Warriors shot 47.4 percent (36-for-76) overall with Lock Haven at 485 percent (33-for-68). LHU was 7-for-19 from the three-point line but was partially undone by its 19 miscues.
Moore was 13-for-20 from the field, including 9-for-13 (4-for-5 from three) in a dominant first half.
Along with Brice (17 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks), Walls (13 points, 7 assists - 2nd-most of the season) and Giordano (11 points), freshman forward
Kobi Nwandu had eight points and three steals, redshirt junior forward
Steven Stoney had seven points, Bing added six points and five boards and junior guard
Ryan Krawczeniuk scored five. Junior forward
Ralik Wise hit a second-half three-pointer and redshirt sophomore guard
Jakwan Jones had three points and two assists.
ESU improves to 12-5 in PSAC Tournament games since the 2009-10 season, when the Warriors began their run of eight straight quarterfinals, including six straight Final Four's.
The Warriors improve to 10-2 in home postseason games (PSAC or NCAA) since the start of that season, and 11-2 at home this year.
