Box Score
PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore guard
Noelle Powell set a new career-high for a second-straight game with 28 points, and three other players also scored in double figures to help East Stroudsburg University maintain its perfect record with an 82-71 win at Chestnut Hill on Monday evening.
Senior forward
Allison Howard contributed 12 points and nine rebounds, while freshman guard
Tiffany Lapotsky added 11 points and junior guard
Imani Brown scored 10 for the Warriors (5-0), who handed the Griffins (3-1) their first setback of the season.
Powell, who was named PSAC East Athlete of the Week earlier in the afternoon, hit 9-of-17 shots from the field overall and 5-of-9 attempts from 3-point range. She also hit on five of her six free throw attempts in 26 minutes of action. Powell, who tallied 21 points last Tuesday at Philadelphia University is the first ESU bench player to score 20+ points in consecutive games since Alyssa Antolick replicated the feat against Mansfield (Jan. 29) and Kutztown (Jan. 31) in 2007.
ESU trailed 21-19 at the end of the first quarter, but Lapotsky and Powell fueled a 19-2 run for the visitors to begin the second. Lapotsky sank all three of her 3-point attempts during that stretch, while Powell added eight points as the Warriors opened up a 38-23 advantage.
Chestnut Hill responded with a 9-0 run of its own to get the margin back down to single digits, and ESU's lead was 41-34 heading into the intermission.
The Griffins scored the first five points of the third quarter to get within two, but the Warriors used another big surge, this time scoring 17 of the next 21 points, to reclaim a comfortable advantage. Six different players scored for ESU during the run.
Similar to the second quarter, Chestnut Hill came back with eight-straight points to partially offset the previous outburst. The Warriors, however, led by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter and never let the home side get closer than nine the rest of the way.
Led by Powell and Lapotsky, the ESU bench outscored Chestnut Hill's by a wide 51-12 margin. The 11 points for Lapotsky were a new season high. Senior guard
Madison Tamburini also contributed in a reserve role, chipping in nine points and a team-high five assists.
The Warriors forced 24 turnovers while committing only 11 of their own, and they turned those turnovers into 31 points on the other end. ESU had 17 steals, the program's most in a game since a 20-steal effort against Kutztown on Jan. 25, 2015. Howard led the way with a career-high six thefts.
Caity Kuhnen had 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting to lead the Griffins, while Mary Trossi registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.
The Warriors will remain on the road this weekend to take on a pair of PSAC West opponents. ESU travels to Edinboro at 1 p.m. on Saturday before heading to Mercyhurst for another 1 p.m. tilt the following afternoon.
Notes:
Howard and Brown have each scored 10+ points in all five games this season.
ESU came away with the win despite shooting only 33.3 percent from the field and 32.4 percent from 3-point range.
The latest D2SIDA Atlantic Regional rankings were released this morning, with the Warriors moving up one spot to No. 3 after winning their only game last week, a 78-66 triumph at Philadelphia University.
