Duane Johnson Named Basketball Ireland Premier League Player of the Month

EAST STROUDSBURG - Former East Stroudsburg University men's basketball standout Duane Johnson was named the Basketball Ireland Premier League Player of the Month for December 2015, it was announced Thursday.

Johnson (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood), a three-time All-PSAC East selection at ESU from 2011-13, averaged 30.3 points, 20.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists in four games in December for DCU Saints, based in Dublin.

He had 18 points and 26 rebounds in a National Cup game vs. UCD Marian on December 5, and played in three league games - 40 points and 26 rebounds vs. UL Eagles on December 13, 24 points and 16 rebounds vs. Belfast Star on December 18 and 39 points and 12 rebounds in a win vs. defending champion C&S UCC Demons on December 20.

Johnson made his debut for DCU Saints in November. In his most recent game, he had 18 points and 16 rebounds vs. Templeogue on January 3.

In five Premier League games, Johnson is averaging 27.4 points, 20.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 2.6 steals and 3.8 blocks per game.

Johnson is in his second professional season. He played for the Corio Bay Stingrays in Australia in 2013-14, helping the team to a 22-2 regular season record and a spot in the three-game championship series. In 27 games, he averaged 20.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.3 blocks per game while posting 13 double-doubles.

In his four years at ESU, Johnson was the third three-time All-PSAC East selection in program history, joining Jonathan Roberts and Lonnie White.

He was part of four straight PSAC Final Four teams and three NCAA Division II Tournament teams, helping the Warriors reach the NCAA Tournament in 2010, 2012 and 2013.

He helped lead ESU to the 2012 PSAC championship, when he was named to the All-PSAC East first team.

Johnson finished his career ranked seventh at ESU in career points (1,347), ninth in rebounds (608), fourth in steals (148), eighth in blocks (90) and second in free throws made (369). He and Roberts are the only two players in school history to rank in the top 10 in both steals and blocks.

He completed his career with 3,267 career minutes, the most by an ESU player since at least 1990, and led the Warriors in minutes played in each of the last three years.

Johnson began his career as a three-time PSAC East Freshman of the Week, averaging 6.9 points and 3.4 rebounds in 30 games on ESU's 2010 PSAC Final Four and NCAA Tournament team that set a school record with 24 wins.

He emerged as one of the Warriors' leaders as a sophomore, earning a spot on the All-PSAC East second team after leading ESU with 12.4 points per game and ranking third in rebounding (4.9 rpg). He had a career-high 26 points, along with eight rebounds and three blocks, in an 83-70 win at Kutztown in the PSAC quarterfinals to send ESU back to the Final Four for a second straight year.

As a junior, he was first team All-PSAC East and helped the Warriors to the second PSAC championship in school history. He averaged 12.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, ranking third on the Warriors in scoring and second in rebounding, assists, steals and blocked shots. He had 19 points, four rebounds, two assists, four steals and a block in a 90-85 win at West Chester in the PSAC championship game, and averaged big all-around numbers (13.3 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 1.7 assists, 1.7 steals, 1.3 blocks) in the three-game run to the PSAC title.

During his senior year, Johnson was an All-PSAC East second team pick while helping ESU to its fourth straight PSAC Final Four and third NCAA Tournament in his career. He was second on the Warriors with 14.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, and ranked in the top 20 in the PSAC in four categories - scoring, rebounding, steals and blocks.

Johnson and Terrance King, a two-time All-PSAC East selection and the 2012 PSAC Tournament MVP, graduated with school records with 118 games played and 12 postseason games. They were members of a senior class that won two PSAC East championships (2010, 2013) and a school-record 82 games, along with their four PSAC Final Four trips, three NCAA Tournament trips and the 2012 PSAC championship.
