Super Region 1 Bracket (through Friday) /
Team Scores
ERIE – Redshirt senior
Jeff Jacobs (174) and redshirt juniors
Thad Frick (165) and
Ed Ebewo (197) advanced to the semifinals for East Stroudsburg University on the first day of the NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Tournament at Gannon.
ESU stands fifth in the team standings with 34.0 points and has seven of its nine wrestlers still alive for a spot in the top four and a trip to the NCAA Championships. The tournament concludes Saturday with the semifinals, finals and consolation matches.
The Warriors' three semifinalists will all face the top seed in their weight class in their next match after wrestling out of the No. 4/No. 5 line in the bracket.
Jacobs, the No. 4 seed at 174, saw less than a period of mat time on Friday to earn a shot at Anthony Petrella (Gannon), who is ranked No. 2 nationally. After receiving a first round bye, Jacobs recorded his team-leading ninth pin of the season by decking No. 5 Matt Littleton (West Liberty) in 2:26 to advance to the semifinals.
Ebewo, seeded No. 4 at 197, also received a first round bye and posted his second win of the year over No. 5 Michael Pollard (Mercyhurst), 7-3, in the quarterfinals. He will take on top seed John Reed (Newberry), who is coming off a 6-4 decision over No. 8 Giovanni Ortiz. Ebewo decisioned Ortiz, 5-4, in a dual last week.
Frick, the No. 5 seed at 165, will face the No. 1-ranked wrestler in Division II in Mike Williams (UNC-Pembroke) in the semifinals after winning both of his matches on Friday. He knocked off No. 4 Gary Lantz (Pitt-Johnstown) with a 7-4 decision in the quarterfinals, avenging a 6-5 setback to Lantz in December, after pinning Kenneth Richards (Ohio Valley) in 44 seconds in the first round.
Freshman
Jordan Toledo (133), redshirt junior
Adam Hluschak (141), senior
Jesse Dunn (157) and sophomore
Will Weaver (285) are still alive in the consolation bracket and can earn a trip to the NCAA Championships with two wins on Saturday.
Toledo, seeded No. 7, notched a 3-2 decision over Josh Testa (Seton Hill) before taking a 6-3 loss to No. 2 Aaron Smith (American International) in the quarters. He responded with a pin in 1:16 of Wesley Heavener (Shippensburg), who he fell to by medical default on January 31 in his only regular season loss since December 12. Toledo faces No. 6 John Fleming (Gannon) in his next bout; Fleming had a 4-3 decision over Toledo in the PSAC Championships early in the season.
Hluschak, the No. 4 seed at 141 and the defending regional runner-up, fell to No. 5 Dallas Evans (Seton Hill) by an 8-6 decision in their third meeting this year. They split the first two match-ups after Hluschak knocked off Evans in the semifinals last year. He opened his day with a 2-0 decision of Nick Hannan (Mercyhurst), then had a 16-1 technical fall of John King (Ohio Valley), and will see No. 8 Christopher Hoffman (American International) on Saturday morning. Hluschak majored Hoffman, 14-5, in the Warriors' dual win on January 15.
Dunn, unseeded in the 157-pound bracket, pinned No. 7 Nicholas Giulliette (Anderson, S.C.) in 1:57 in his first consolation match after dropping a 6-4 decision to No. 8 Anthony Frost (Kutztown) in the first round. Next up is John Linquist (Shippensburg) in a rematch of Dunn's 5-4 decision in the PSAC Championships. Dunn and Linquist are both coming off first period pins in their opening consolation bout.
Weaver, seeded No. 7 at 285, won an 8-1 decision over Casey Hines (American International) in the opening round before falling to No. 2 Jake Elkins (Newberry) by first period fall in the quarterfinals. He came back with an 8-2 decision over James De La Riva (UNC-Pembroke) and will face No. 6 Ron Oswald (Seton Hill) in his next match. Oswald won a 4-1 decision over Weaver at the Mid-Atlantic Duals.
Two Warriors saw their regional tournament come to an end on Friday. Redshirt freshman
Brendan McKeown, seeded No. 4 at 184, posted a 4-3 decision over Angel Mazara (American International) in his first round match but was pinned by No. 5 Christopher Boyd (Gannon) in the quarterfinals and No. 3 Seth Csaszar (Kutztown) in the consolations. Unseeded Derrick Williams (West Liberty) pinned Csazar in 1:33 to drop him to the consolation bracket.
At 149, sophomore
Tyler Wilton fell by a 15-7 major decision to No. 6 Seiji Borja (Newberry) and a 9-4 decision to Devan Jones (Shippensburg).
Newberry leads the team standings with 65.0 points and has all eight of its wrestlers still alive, eight in the championships and two in the wrestlebacks. Pitt-Johnstown (57.0) is second, followed by Gannon (43.0), UNC-Pembroke (42.0), ESU (34.0), Mercyhurst (33.0), Kutztown (32.0) and West Liberty (30.0) to round out the top eight of the 13 schools.
Hluschak and Shane Mallory (184), the eventual national runner-up, earned trips to the NCAA Championships last year in ESU's first season in Division II. ESU finished 10th of 15 schools at the Super Region 1 Tournament.
