EAST STROUDSBURG – Redshirt junior Ed Ebewo had a 45-second pin at 197 pounds and sophomore Will Weaver and redshirt junior Adam Hluschak both won their 20th matches of the season as East Stroudsburg University defeated Shippensburg, 22-18, in Division II wrestling on Thursday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warriors built an 18-0 lead through the first five bouts in a match that began at 165 pounds. Redshirt junior Thad Frick returned to the mat for the first time since December 12 and opened the night with a 5-3 decision over Shippensburg's Nate Reese, and redshirt senior Jeff Jacobs (174) and junior James Gonzalez (184) followed with wins by decision to stake ESU to a 9-0 lead.
Ebewo put Josh Lang on his back about 30 seconds into their 197-pound bout and recorded the fall to improve to 15-8, and Weaver moved to 20-12 with a 3-1 decision over Dan Estricher at 285.
Hluschak posted his 20th win a few minutes later with a 13-1 major decision at 141 pounds on the strength of a dominating first period. A national qualifier a year ago, Hluschak is 20-11 overall and 6-2 against Division II competition.
Shippensburg earned 12 of its 18 points with a forfeit at 125 and an injury default at 133. The Red Raiders also won by decision in the final two bouts of the night at 149 pounds, where redshirt freshman Luke Grassi fell 2-1 to Devan Jones, and 157, where senior Jesse Dunn had a riding time advantage of more than two minutes but took an 8-6 loss against James Reilley.
ESU improves to 31-12-1 in its all-time series with Shippensburg and has won eight straight duals and 16 of the last 17 against the Red Raiders since the mid-1980s.
The Warriors are back on the mat on Monday night with a 7 p.m. match-up with Lycoming College at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Notes: Frick, the ESU Open runner-up at 165, improves to 22-14 in duals at ESU . . Jacobs has a team-best 10-2 dual mark and is 14-6 overall . . Gonzalez wrestled in his fifth dual of the year, moving to 3-2 in duals and 9-7 overall . . Ebewo (15-8, 7-5) had his third straight bonus point win and second straight pin . . Weaver is 20-12 after going 11-16 a year ago . . Hluschak (20-11, 11-4) was 21-16 last year when he wrestled to the regional final to qualify for nationals.
