EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University's men's and women's track and field programs, along with 11 individual student-athletes, have achieved All-Academic status from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2010 season.
The Warriors had seven men's athletes named to the All-Academic team, tied with Ashland and Pittsburg State for the most in Division II – seniors
Matthew Gallup,
Drew Miller and
Paul Wagner, junior
Greg Pammer and sophomores
Josh Hontz,
Dan Johnson and
Ian Melhorn.
The women's team is represented by seniors
Trina Carito and
Janelle Smith, junior
Lynn Mayer and freshman
Corinne Fitzgerald. Student-athletes must maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average and reach at least one NCAA indoor or outdoor qualifying standard to be eligible for the list.
ESU was one of five PSAC schools to have both its men's and women's teams record a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, along with Edinboro, IUP, Lock Haven and Slippery Rock.
The individual recipients are highlighted by Mayer and Wagner, who both earned All-America status this year.
Mayer tied for second indoors in the high jump (5-8 1/2) and tied for third outdoors (5-7) to become the second ESU athlete to earn four All-America honors, matching her coach, Karen (Way) Gaita. Mayer will return for her senior year looking for two more All-America accolades, along with ESU's first national championship since Gaita won the outdoor high jump in 1991. She was also the PSAC indoor and outdoor champion in the event.
Wagner was ESU's Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year after a career that included two All-America performances in the hammer throw, eight PSAC championships and school and conference records in the hammer (203-2) and weight throw (66-3 3/4). As a senior, Wagner won four PSAC championships, taking the weight and shot put indoors and hammer and shot put outdoors, where he was the Men's Athlete of the Meet.
Wagner was also a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America selection, including placement on the first team this year, and a three-time recipient of the PSAC Top 10 Award.
ESU landed five track and field athletes on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team – Wagner, Miller, Carito, Mayer and Smith. Miller joined Wagner on the men's first team and Carito was a women's first team selection in 2008 and 2010.
