EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior outfielder
Alicea Ashe has been named the Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week at East Stroudsburg University for her record-setting performance for the Warriors softball team this season.
Ashe (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) hit 10 home runs to establish a new single season record and was the only player to start all 49 games as ESU made its fourth straight appearance in the PSAC tournament.
She set the record in the Warriors' first playoff game, homering against IUP in the tournament held at California (Pa.). The previous record of nine home runs was set by Jen Veronesi, an All-Region shortstop, during the 2006 season.
Ashe was named second team All-PSAC East following her junior campaign, as she led ESU with 32 RBI, was second with 25 runs and had a .282 batting average, .333 on-base percentage and .532 slugging percentage. Her RBI total (32), extra-base hits (18) and total bases (83) are all among the top three seasons in school history.
Ashe put together 11 multi-hit and eight multi-RBI games, including a pair of four-RBI games against Armstrong Atlantic (two home runs) in the first weekend of the season and a grand slam at Philadelphia University on April 8 for her ninth homer of the year to tie the school record. She also went deep in PSAC East games on back-to-back days against Kutztown and West Chester.
She entered the year with two home runs, both during her sophomore year, and is six homers behind Veronesi's school record of 18 with one year remaining at ESU.
