EAST STROUDSBURG – Andy Heimbach and Christine Swiker were named the Senior Athletes of the Year and Paul Wagner and Niki Pasquarella received Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors as East Stroudsburg University held its annual Athletic Awards Banquet on Sunday afternoon at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort.
Heimbach (Allentown/Central Catholic) set school records with 76 three-pointers this season and 236 in his career while leading the Warriors' men's basketball team to its first PSAC East regular season championship and PSAC semifinal appearance since 1992 and the second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.
A first team All-PSAC East selection, Heimbach led one of the most balanced teams in the nation with 12.6 points per game and finished his career with 1,153 points. He was one of ESU's top two scorers in each of his last three years and hit at least 40 three-pointers in all four seasons. He shared the team MVP award with his backcourt mate, point guard Robby Pines, who were part of a school-record 76 wins over their four years.
Swiker (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) was named the swimming MVP for the fourth straight year and then took home the Female Senior Athlete of the Year award at the end of the program.
She holds three individual and two relay records in the pool for the Warriors, setting all five at this year's PSAC championships. She lowered her own records in the 200 and 400 individual medley and broke the 29-year old record in the 200 fly that was set in 1981. She was also a member of the Warriors' record-setting 400 medley and 400 free relay teams and anchored the 400 free relay to break the previous record by almost three seconds in her final time in the pool for ESU.
Wagner (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley), a Sport Management major with a 3.80 grade-point average, was named the Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year after earning All-America and Academic All-America honors during his career for the track and field team. He has been a six-time PSAC champion in throwing events, holds school records in the indoor weight throw and outdoor hammer throw, and is an automatic qualifier in the hammer for the upcoming NCAA Division II Championships.
Pasquarella (Pipersville/Palisades) has a 3.80 GPA in Elementary Education and was a four-year letterwinner in both cross country and track and field. She was the cross country MVP as a sophomore and junior and the Coaches Award recipient as a senior and paced the Warriors in 13 of their 14 meets in 2008 and 2009. In track and field, she placed third in the PSAC in the 3000m steeplechase as a sophomore and has been one of ESU's most dependable distance runners throughout her career.
The sixth annual John Pooley Sportsmanship Award was presented to head coach
Rob Berkowitz and the women's soccer team. The Warriors were the only men's or women's team in the PSAC to receive the NSCAA Silver Ethics Award, based on the number of yellow and red cards received along with the referee's match reports. The David Carlyon Award for athletic training went to Jerome Dancho.
ESU's letterwinners and seniors in attendance were recognized, along with the Coaches Award and team MVP recipients in all 21 varsity sports, excluding track and field which will select its award winners following the outdoor season.
