Gold Glove team
EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University senior pitcher
Christian Saveri was named second team All-Atlantic Region and senior catcher
Brendan O'Connor and sophomore outfielder
Carey Zimmerman were both named to the Gold Glove team by the members of the ABCA, it was released Thursday.
Saveri (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic), the PSAC East Pitcher of the Year, was named to the second team on all three All-Region teams this year – Daktronics (sports information directors), NCBWA (National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association) and ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association).
The left-hander threw 42.2 innings in PSAC East games, the most by any pitcher in the conference, which included at least 5.2 innings in all six starts along with two saves. He finished the year with a 3.37 ERA, 65 strikeouts and 14 walks in 69.1 innings and anchored a pitching staff that finished the season with two freshmen and a first-year sophomore in the starting rotation.
Saveri was ESU's first PSAC East Pitcher of the Year since Mike Balent was selected in 1985, and head coach
John Kochmansky was named the division's Coach of the Year after the Warriors went 26-18 during the regular season (26-20 overall) and made their fourth-ever appearance in the PSAC tournament.
Saveri and
Jeremy Gigliotti (2009) give ESU two straight left-handed pitchers who earned mention on all three All-Region teams. Third baseman
Mark Angelo was a first team ABCA All-Region selection last season and was named to the All-America third team.
O'Connor (Saylorsburg/Pleasant Valley) and Zimmerman (Minisink Hills/East Stroudsburg South) were both named to the second team on the Gold Glove squad, which is sponsored by Rawlings.
O'Connor was a three-year starter at catcher for the Warriors, starting 25 games as a senior and 95 games in his career. He threw out 40 percent (14-of-35) of opposing base stealers this season and had a .979 fielding percentage as the primary backstop for a pitching staff that ranked 11th in Division II with 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings (324 strikeouts in 337.1 IP).
Zimmerman is the second straight ESU centerfielder to earn Gold Glove status, moving from left field to center after
Mike Bortz finished his career. One of the fastest players in the PSAC, Zimmerman had 68 putouts and just one error this year and 33 putouts, four outfield assists and one error as a freshman.
ESU finished the year ranked third in the PSAC with a .959 fielding percentage and is one of three schools with multiple Gold Glove selections, along with West Chester (four first team) and Seton Hill (two second team).
The Warriors have had at least one player honored in three of the first four years that the Gold Glove team has been selected. Jacob DeBoer was the first team second baseman in 2007, and Bortz was a second team outfielder in 2009.
