EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University honored the academic achievements of its student-athletes with its annual National Student-Athlete Day Celebration, held Thursday afternoon on campus in the Keystone Room.
The program, assembled by Professor
Nancy Jo Greenawalt, Academic Coordinator for Athletics, recognized exceptional work in the classroom by the Warriors' student-athletes, as well as those who have represented ESU at the national level.
The 2009-10 Athletic Director's Honor Roll is comprised of 159 student-athletes who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 while participant in a varsity sport. The number of student-athletes honored from ESU's 21 varsity sports was 19 more than last year's total, and 44 more than two years ago.
The team academic achievement awards, now in their ninth year, were presented to the men's and women's teams with the top grade-point averages in the athletic department. The soccer team won the men's award for the first time after posting a 3.115 GPA, while the women's volleyball team was honored for the third time after posting a 3.473 GPA through last semester. The women's volleyball team won the award the first two years after its inception in 2002.
Matt Freed, an All-American redshirt junior linebacker, was recognized as a first team selection on the ESPN The Magazine Football Academic All-America team. Freed is the first ESU student-athlete to receive the honor since 2004 and just the sixth in school history.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which includes President Alexa Detzi (women's basketball), Vice President Marissa Tanner (women's tennis), Secretary Kierstyn DeNardo (field hockey) and Treasurer Andy Heimbach (men's basketball), was also lauded for its contributions to ESU this year. Detzi was the guest speaker on behalf of her fellow student-athletes.
The “Winning Warrior” Award was presented to
Justin Potts for his contributions to the Warriors' basketball programs this year. Potts, in his eight year at ESU, served as the acting head coach of the women's basketball team while maintaining his responsibilities as assistant coach for the men's team which won a share of the PSAC East regular season championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history.
Nearly 30 faculty, administration and staff members received special invitations to the event after being identified by student-athletes for serving as role models, mentors and advisors during their academic careers.
Professor Greenawalt, Dr. Gioglio, President Dr. Robert J. Dillman and Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Doreen Tobin also offered remarks of congratulations to ESU's athletes and coaches for their outstanding achievements during the 2009-10 academic year.
