EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University's season-ending softball doubleheader against Georgian Court has been cancelled, the university announced Wednesday.
The Warriors finish the 2010 season with a 19-30 record and their fourth straight appearance in the PSAC softball playoffs. The first round of the tournament was held last weekend at three sites, with ESU traveling to California (Pa.).
The highlights of the season included a new single-season home run record from junior CF
Alicea Ashe, who hit 10 home runs to break the previous record set by All-Region shortstop Jen Veronesi in 2006. Ashe finished with 32 RBI, tied with Veronesi for second in a season, 18 extra-base hits, also tied for second, and 93 total bases, which rank third.
Junior
Brittany Racek, the designated player, had her season cut short by injury after 32 games but still established the school record with a .691 slugging percentage and ranks seventh with a .381 batting average. Racek had 16 extra-base hits (eight doubles, two triples, six home runs) for 67 total bases in 97 at bats. She also led the team with 26 runs out of the leadoff spot.
Seniors
Jackie Battaglino and
Kara Darcey finished their careers with several spots on ESU's top 10 lists and were members of all four PSAC playoff teams.
Battaglino appeared in 34 games this season, the second-most in school history, with an 11-16 record, two saves and a 3.93 ERA in 171.0 innings. In her career, she holds the school record with five saves, ranks seventh with 190 strikeouts and is eighth in games pitched (83) and ninth in games started (53) and innings (427.0).
Darcey started 187 games in her career for the Warriors, playing right field her first three years and splitting time between the outfield and catcher as a senior. She ranks fourth in career walks (52), sixth in RBI (74), tied for sixth in home runs (10), and ninth in hits (133) and total bases (187). She hit a career-best .325 as a junior with 20 RBI.
Sophomore 3B
Rachel Gieringer also had a strong year for the Warriors, following up her PSAC East Freshman of the Year season in 2009 with a .348 batting average, four home runs and 16 RBI this spring. Her 46 hits led the team and she has 79 hits and 40 RBI in her first two years.
