EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University senior
Paul Wagner has been named to the PSAC Winter Top 10 for the 2009-10 indoor track and field season, it was announced Thursday.
Wagner (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley) won PSAC championships in the weight throw and shot put and competed in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the weight throw in Albuquerque, N.M.
He has a 3.80 grade-point average as a Sport Management major and was also named to the PSAC Spring Top 10 list last year. Nominees must have at least a 3.50 GPA and legitimate athletic credentials as a starter or key reserve during the season in which they are nominated.
ESU led the PSAC with five Top 10 recipients in 2008-09 and Wagner is the eighth ESU student-athlete to receive multiple Top 10 citations. ESU has had 24 athletes receive a total of 32 Top 10 awards since its inception in 1997-98. Thirty PSAC student-athletes, 15 male and 15 female, are honored annually.
He joins Lindsay Foder (women's soccer) and Matt Freed (football) as ESU student-athletes who have been honored on the PSAC Top 10 list in 2009-10.
Wagner is a six-time PSAC champion during his career at ESU and was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team last year.
He earned All-America honors in the hammer throw after placing sixth at the 2009 NCAA outdoor championships with an ESU and PSAC record of 196-9. He also owns school and conference marks in the weight throw at 66-3 3/4.
His PSAC championships include three in the weight (2008-10) and one in the shot put (2010) during the indoor season and the last two conference titles in the hammer. He was the PSAC indoor co-field athlete of the meet and outdoor field athlete of the meet in 2008.
The seasonal Top 10 lists are selected by the PSAC's sports information directors. All of the recipients are placed on the ballot for the Pete Nevins Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, which is given to one male and one female recipient at the end of the academic year. Nevins was ESU's sports information director for 33 years, from 1969 until his retirement in 2002.
ESU is one of four PSAC schools with at least three Top 10 recipients so far this year. Shippensburg leads the way with four, followed by ESU, Edinboro and Slippery Rock with three each. Clarion and West Chester have two honorees through this winter.
