EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior guard
Robby Pines has been named East Stroudsburg University's Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week for his performance for the Warriors in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the PSAC men's basketball tournament.
Pines (Telford/Souderton) ranks ninth in Division II with 6.4 assists per game and had eight assists in both of the Warriors' playoff games last week.
He had six points, five rebounds and eight assists in a 76-65 win over Cheyney that gave ESU its first PSAC semifinal appearance since 1992, and posted 11 points, six rebounds, eight assists and three steals in a 67-63 loss to No. 5 IUP in the semifinals on Friday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Pines has led the Warriors to the second NCAA Tournament berth in school history in his only season as a full-time starter. He leads ESU with 31.1 minutes per game – 34.8 per game since the start of the PSAC East schedule – and is in the top four in the PSAC in four categories, ranking first in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3), third in steals (2.3) and fourth in free throw percentage (79.0).
He is also the team's fourth-leading scorer with 8.2 points per game, including nine games in double figures, and is fourth in rebounding with 4.1 per game. He has seven games with at least five points, five rebounds and five assists this season, including three of the last four contests.
Pines is second in school history with 187 assists, sixth with 304 assists in his career, fifth in single-season steals with 67 and tied for 10th with 121 career steals. He was sixth in Division II with a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio last season (87 assists, 29 turnovers) and is 25th in the country this year.
The Warriors will take a school-record 24 wins into their first NCAA tournament game in 20 years. They are seeded No. 5 in the Atlantic Region and face No. 4 West Virginia State in the first round on Saturday at 5 p.m. at IUP.
