EAST STROUDSBURG – Redshirt senior Shane Mallory is East Stroudsburg University's Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week after earning All-America honors and finishing as the runner-up at 184 pounds at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships.

Mallory (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) won his first three matches to advance to the championship match at the University of Nebraska at Omaha last weekend. He is ESU's first wrestling All-American since 1989 and the 17th in school history.

Mallory knocked off two of the top four wrestlers in the NWCA poll that was released prior to the championships. He won a 7-6 decision over No. 2 Derek Skala (St. Cloud State) in the opening round, beat Derek Ross (Nebraska-Kearney) 8-2 in the quarterfinals and defeated No. 4 Tim Darling (Kutztown) 7-3 in the semifinals to move into the finals, where he fell to No. 7 Bryant Blanton (Newberry, S.C.) 2-1 in the first tiebreaker period.

Mallory finished his senior season with a 26-9 record and had an 80-47 record in his career at ESU. He had a career dual record of 41-22 while wrestling at 174, 184 and 197 and had 31 bonus point wins – nine falls, six technical falls and 16 major decisions.

He placed in the top three at the PSAC Championships in three different weight classes – third at 174 as a sophomore, third at 197 as a junior and second at 184 as a senior – and was fourth at the Super Region 1 championships before avenging his loss to Darling in the regional semifinals with his victory in the national semifinals last weekend.

Mallory and redshirt sophomore Adam Hluschak (141) were national qualifiers in ESU's first season in Division II in more than three decades, and Mallory was the Warriors' first All-American since Jack Cuvo was the Division I national champion at 118 pounds and Anibal Nieves placed in the top eight at 134 pounds in 1989.

The Warriors had four wrestlers reach the 20-win mark this season – Mallory, Hluschak (21-16), redshirt sophomore Thad Frick (25-13 at 157) and redshirt junior Jeff Jacobs (22-14 at 165). ESU's 9-8 dual record included a 5-1 mark against Division II competition.
