EAST STROUDSBURG - The East Stroudsburg University baseball program has joined forces with The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to help fight this deadly disease. Cystic fibrosis is an incurable, fatal genetic disorder that affects more than 30,000 Americans, usually the most vulnerable among us: our children.
What is cystic fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening disease that causes mucus to build up and clog some of the organs in the body, particularly in the lungs and pancreas. When mucus clogs the lungs, it can make breathing very difficult. The thick mucus also causes bacteria (or germs) to get stuck in the airways, which causes inflammation (or swelling) and infections that leads to lung damage.
Mucus also can block the digestive tract and pancreas. The mucus stops digestive enzymes from getting to the intestines. The body needs these enzymes to break down food, which provides important nutrients to help us grow and stay healthy. People with cystic fibrosis often need to replace these enzymes with capsules they take with their meals and snacks to help digest the food and get the proper nutrition. (Cystic Fibrosis Foundation)
Dollars for Doubles campaign
ESU baseball is launching a campaign to help raise money in finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Dollars for Doubles campaign works like this:
Individuals, businesses, and families can pledge money for each double an ESU baseball player hits. ESU baseball will donate 50% of the total proceeds to the Cystic Fibrosis foundation local chapter. For example, if a person pledges $1.00 per double and the team total for doubles at the end of the season is 100, this person donates $100 with $50 going to the Cystic Fibrosis foundation and $50 going to the ESU baseball program. On average a team will hit 80-110 doubles per season. Last year the Warriors set a school record for doubles with 132 which set the campaign in motion.
To pledge your support for this project, please fill out the pledge sheet by clicking here, which will be returned to ESU head baseball coach John Kochmansky. For more information, contact Coach Kochmansky at jkochmansky@po-box.esu.edu or (570) 422-3263. Please note: your contact information will be collected through the pledge sheet, and you will be contacted at the end of the 2010 season.
Thank you for helping us find a cure for this life-threatening disease.
