11/11/2008 12:00:00 AM

EAST STROUDSBURG - Freshman Doug Jankowski is the East Stroudsburg University ABC Trophy, Inc. Athlete of the Week after leading the Warriors men's cross country team to eighth place in the Atlantic Region on Saturday at Slippery Rock.

Jankowski (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) was 38th and led a very tight ESU pack that had a spread of just 39 seconds from its first through fifth runners. He finished with a time of 33:51 over the 10k course at Cooper's Lake, just ahead of juniors Pat Carr and Ryan Doyle, who helped the Warriors place their first five in the top 52 in the region.

The freshman was ESU's top runner in three of the seven meets he ran in during the season prior to the regional championships. He was third to lead the Warriors to the team championship at the Don Cathcart Invitational and sixth at the Lock Haven Invite to help ESU place second out of six schools.

Jankowski and the Warriors cross country program will focus their attention on the indoor track & field season, which begins next month with the Lafayette Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Allan P. Kirby Sports Center.

ABC Trophy, Inc. awards an athlete of the week to an outstanding student-athlete each week at ESU. Each recipient is presented with a red and silver plaque.
