12/17/2009 12:00:00 AM

EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University linebacker Matt Freed has been named to the Associated Press Little All-America third team for the second straight season, becoming just the third player in school history to earn multiple All-America honors from the Associated Press, it was announced Thursday.

Freed (Souderton/Souderton) was recognized by a panel of the nation's sportswriters who select the team, which is comprised of the top players in Division II, III and NAIA football. He joins quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger and wide receiver Evan Prall, who were both selected in 2005 and 2006, as two-time AP Little All-Americans for the Warriors.

A redshirt junior, Freed compiled 132 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks while leading the Warriors to the fourth NCAA Division II playoff appearance in school history. He was one of just two sophomores on the 2008 AP Little All-America squad, when he had 126 tackles, 11 TFL and four sacks, and is among eight players who are repeat selections from last year's team.

Earlier this month, Freed was named to the Daktronics Division II All-America first team for the second consecutive year, and was the Super Region One Defensive Player of the year in voting done by the region's sports information directors. He was also recognized as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American this fall.

ESU has had at least one selection on the AP Little All-America team in seven of the last 10 seasons. Last year, punter Nick Krut was on the first team and Freed was on the third team. Terwilliger and Prall were both honored in 2005 and 2006, defensive back Matt Crispell was a first team selection in 2004, offensive lineman Jim Sodano and punter Adam Hostetter were mentioned in 2001 and linebacker Kevin Nagle was named to the first team in 2000.

The Warriors have produced 20 Little All-America selections, including six linebackers, the most of any position – Freed (2008 and 2009), Nagle (2000), Pat Brady (1988), Mike Reichenbach (1983), Jeff Johnson (1978) and Tom Kozlosky (1974). Nagle and Reichenbach earned first team honors.
