Wagner Earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Recognition

EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University junior Paul Wagner has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Men's Track & Field All-America third team for the 2008-09 year, it was announced Thursday.

Wagner (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley), who was one of three ESU student-athletes named as recipients of the PSAC Spring Top 10 Award on Wednesday, is the Warriors' second Academic All-American this year, joining Chris Bach in men's basketball. ESU has had 21 Academic All-Americans in school history, including five in track and field.

Wagner had a 3.78 grade-point average in Sport Management at the beginning of the spring semester and earned his first career All-America honor in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships last month. He set the school and conference records with a throw of 196-9 to finish sixth in the nation and also competed at NCAA's in the weight throw during the indoor season.

He has won four PSAC championships in his career, two in the hammer and two in the weight, and set the PSAC meet record of 190-3 in the hammer in May. He was the PSAC Field Athlete of the Meet during both the indoor and outdoor season as a sophomore while claiming his first two conference titles.

Wagner also holds the school record in the weight at 61-4 3/4, which he set at the NCAA Championships, to go with his mark in the hammer. He had season bests of 50-7 1/2 in the shot put and 157-10 in the discus during the outdoor season and 49-2 1/4 in the shot put indoors in 2008-09.

Dan Gale was ESU's last track and field Academic All-American in 2006. Cheryl Griffin (2001), Rob Stone (1996, 98) and Laura Mason (1983-85) were also honored during their careers.
